How Long Does a Period Last? Normal Length, Heavy Flow, and When to Worry

Quick summary: A "normal" period usually lasts between 3 and 7 days, with the heaviest flow arriving in the first two to three days and then tapering off. What matters more than a single number is your normal—a duration that is roughly consistent from cycle to cycle. Periods that consistently last longer than 7 days (or soak through pads or tampons every hour or two) count as heavy menstrual bleeding and deserve a conversation with a doctor. Periods that consistently last under 2 days, or that arrive very light, can signal a different issue like low estrogen, an anovulatory cycle (a bleed without ovulation), or a thin uterine lining. The most reliable way to know if something has changed is to track your flow and length for a few cycles, because the reference point that actually matters is your own baseline—not a textbook average.

It is easy to feel unsure about whether your period is "normal," because almost nobody talks about the actual range. Most people only hear about a mythical 28-day cycle with 5 days of bleeding, and then worry when their body does not match it.

Here is what is actually normal, what is not, and what to watch for.

The normal range

For most people, menstrual bleeding follows a predictable arc:

  • Length: 3–7 days is the widely accepted normal range.
  • Heaviest days: The first 2–3 days usually carry most of the flow.
  • Total blood loss: Roughly 30–80 ml over the whole period, though this is hard to measure at home.
  • Consistency: Your own duration and flow should be fairly similar month to month.

A single shorter or longer period is usually nothing to worry about—stress, travel, illness, and a change in routine can all nudge one cycle. It is a pattern of change that matters.

When a period is long or heavy

Bleeding that goes on and on is worth paying attention to.

SignWhat it may suggest
Bleeding longer than 7 daysHormonal imbalance, fibroids, or other structural causes
Soaking a pad/tampon hourlyHeavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
Passing clots larger than a quarterWorth flagging to a clinician
Feeling faint or short of breathPossible iron-deficiency anemia

If this sounds familiar, read heavy period with clots for a deeper dive, and the iron equation on why heavy flow can drain your energy.

When a period is short or light

At the other end, a period that is suddenly very short or scanty can mean:

  • A light period driven by hormonal birth control, stress, or perimenopause.
  • An anovulatory cycle, where no egg was released, so the lining is thinner and the bleed is lighter.
  • Low estrogen or an underactive thyroid, both of which can shorten or thin flow.

See why is my period so light and anovulatory cycle signs to learn how to tell these apart.

What actually helps you stay on top of it

  1. Log start and end dates. You cannot know your normal length without a record.
  2. Note flow heaviness. A simple light–medium–heavy rating per day is enough to spot trends.
  3. Track clots and symptoms. Size and frequency help a doctor more than a vague "it was heavy."
  4. Compare cycles, not days. Three cycles of consistent change are more meaningful than one odd month.

When to see a doctor

See a clinician if:

  • Your period regularly lasts longer than 7 days
  • You soak through protection every hour for several hours
  • You pass clots larger than a quarter
  • You feel dizzy, faint, or unusually fatigued (possible anemia)
  • Your flow suddenly changes and stays changed for several cycles

EvaShark Insight: You can only know your period is "off" if you know your baseline—and that baseline lives in your logs, not your memory. EvaShark tracks your period length and flow every cycle, so a genuinely different month stands out from the noise, and you can walk into any appointment with a clear record instead of a guess.
